Origami Shells

araffo97 · 2026/04/02

Description

When designing the robots, I chose a faceted, origami-inspired shell for both the humanoid and the dog unit. I wanted to replace traditional, smooth metal plating with a complex pattern of geometric panels, visually suggesting they were sculpted from folded paper. This deliberate choice allows their forms to appear lightweight and intricate while maintaining structural clarity.

Thank you Gerald! That is an interesting point of view as functionality goes. I went for ease of manufacturing and clean, elegant aesthetic while maintaining the base looks!! I am glad you like it!!

This is my favorite (so far) - especially like the idea of actually making a protective shield out of paper around the robot. Something that if you work near a robot will give you instant proximity alerts through touch, yet "fold" under pressure and give you extra time to react while adding little to no cost/weight. Also ... I do dig the looks.
