Importing Character Models into Unity: A Step-by-Step Guide

Unity enthusiasts! Welcome back to the fifth installment of our 3D movement series. In this video, we will delve into the process of importing a character model from Mixamo into your Unity project. Let's get started!

Creating a Folder for Your Character

  1. Begin by creating a dedicated folder for your character in photos.
  2. Head to Mixamo in your browser, log in or sign up, and navigate to the characters section.
  3. Choose your desired character model - in this case, let's select the ninja character.
  4. Opt for the FBX format suitable for Unity and download the model.

Importing the Character Model

  1. Open your Unity editor and locate the downloaded FBX file in your folder.
  2. Drag and drop the FBX file into your character folder in Unity.
  3. Drag the character model from the folder into the scene view.
  4. Note that the ninja character may lack textures or colors initially.

Applying Textures to the Character

  1. Return to the model, navigate to materials, and extract textures.
  2. Create a folder for textures, select the extracted textures, and apply them to the character.

Enhancing the Character

  1. Add the player movement script to enable character interaction.
  2. Scale up the character for better visibility.
  3. Attach a rigid body to grant the character gravity.
  4. Remove any unnecessary elements such as a cube previously used as a player.

Configuring Movement Mechanics

  1. Modify the script to rectify any jump mechanics issues by adding a force mode parameter of type 'impulse'.
  2. Adjust the run speed and jump force values in the script for optimal movement.
  3. Include a Collider for the character, like a box Collider, and refine its constraints.
