Blender 101: Creating a Low Poly Sword

Blender is a powerful tool for 3D modeling, and in this tutorial, we are going to continue building our skills by creating a low poly sword. This sword can be used as a game asset for low poly PC or mobile games. We will start by making the basic shape of the sword using the skills we have learned so far.

Creating the Sword Handle and Blade

Starting with a Cylinder

  • Open a new scene and delete the default cube.
  • Add a cylinder (Shift + A) and adjust the number of vertices to 6.
  • Enter edit mode (Tab) and begin shaping the pommel at the bottom of the handle using loop cuts and scaling.

Shaping the Handle and Guard

  • Scale and extrude the handle to create a basic shape.
  • Add a loop cut to modify the handle's profile.
  • Extrude parts of the handle to form the guard.
  • Fine-tune the proportions of the handle and guard for a more appealing look.

Creating the Blade

  • Inset a face to form the base of the blade.
  • Extrude faces to create the blade's length and thickness.
  • Adjust the width of the blade by scaling different sections.

Applying Materials to the Sword

Understanding Material Slots

  • Switch to the Shading mode in Blender.
  • Navigate to the Material Properties tab.
  • Create new material slots for different parts of the sword.

Assigning Materials

  • Assign the Steel material to the blade for a metallic look.
  • Create materials like Brass for the guard and pommel, and Wood for the handle.
  • Assign each material to its corresponding part of the sword in edit mode.

Enhancing the Appearance

  • Adjust material properties like base color and metallicness for each material.
  • Use viewport shading modes to preview the materials on the object.
  • Experiment with different colors and settings to achieve the desired look for each part of the sword.

Conclusion

Creating a low poly sword in Blender is a great way to practice and enhance your 3D modeling skills. By applying different materials to various parts of the sword, you can add detail and realism to your model. In future tutorials, we will delve deeper into shading and rendering to create a photorealistic version of the sword. Stay tuned for more exciting Blender tutorials!
